Week 12 Reflection

  1. This was my first week in my new (or old) placement. My original host teacher is back, and everyone was more than happy to see her. The self-contained student that we work with has been extremely good. She has started to earn back some of her rights, as well as some fun things that are motivating to her. I couldn't believe the difference in her attitude, and work ethic since her actual teacher has returned. She is polite and hard working, which was a big change from when the substitute was here. I am enjoying seeing some of the more "special ed" side of the school, including the pull out classes and social skills work. I also feel like I am getting a good experience working with a student that is self-contained. My host teacher is outrageously organized, and she has been really helpful in exposing me to, as well as explaining a lot of the paperwork that she does each day. She makes sure to document everything, and this can transfer to many of the legal forms that get turned in. I am getting great lessons in dealing with students with behavior disorders, I think that my classroom management, as well as reward system in a classroom would be completely different now. This experience has also taught me a lot about patience, which is something you might think you have until you work with seriously disturbing behaviors. This has even transfered to my outside life, where people have commented that nothing really upsets or agitates me anymore. I just tell them that I am a special education teacher, and that is usually all the explanation people need! I look forward to the next few weeks, and although I wish I had more time, I plan to make the best of it.

  2. It is great that you have been exposed to so many different aspects of Special Education in such a short time. Seeing all of the different aspects will help to prepare you for your classroom in the future. I can see the positive relationships that you have built with the students just by checking in with them on a daily basis.

  3. Steph - Roll with the ups and down of the job can be challenging but seems to em you've got a decent handle on that for now. On another note, isn't it amazing how some teachers develop good relationships with kids and they leave many of their inappropriate behaviors at the door. Finding a way to master that is key to developing a classroom management system that works.

  4. Love your comments about patience. Isn't it wonderful to see you get this in control before you step in the classroom?! There will be days you lose it, but as long as that's the exception, not the rule, you'll be fine!
